Maintaining proper oral hygiene is one of the most important ways you can stay healthy. Brushing and flossing regularly to avoid gum disease means you’re less likely to develop diseases of the whole body, including diabetes, heart disease and various types of cancer.

Dentists and dental hygienists have an important job, but landing a career in dentistry often means shelling out a ton of money for dental school. In fact, according to an American Dental Education Association survey, the average dental student graduates with more than $200,000 of debt. That’s nearly as much as it costs to attend some medical schools!

Thankfully, we’ve got you covered with these scholarship opportunities for aspiring dentists and dental hygienists.

As the world’s largest and oldest dental association, the American Dental Association should be your first stop when researching scholarships for dental students. The ADA Foundation supports oral health education programs through various grants, scholarships and awards – many of which you could be eligible for.

Check out the scholarships available from the American Dental Education Association, which offers a variety of generous scholarships to those pursuing careers as hygienists or dentists. For instance, the ADEA/Crest Oral-B Laboratories Scholarships for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers supports dental hygiene students pursuing education beyond an associate degree and who wish to work in academia.

The scholarship includes $1,500 for tuition and fees, and $500 to subsidize travel to an annual ADEA exhibition. There’s also a similar scholarship for predoctoral dental students pursuing academic careers, which awards $4,500 for tuition and fees and $500 for travel to the exhibition.

If you’re not interested in a career in academia, ADEA has scholarships for you, too. The ADEA Preventive Dentistry Scholarship supports predoctoral students through 12 $2,500 scholarships each year.

To be eligible, you must demonstrate academic excellence and be nominated by the dean of your dental school, among other requirements. Submissions are typically due in November, so check back often.

Have you served or are you planning on serving in the Army, Navy or Air Force? The F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program offers medical school scholarships – including scholarships for dental school – that cover all costs related to your education, plus provide a monthly stipend while students attend school. In return, you commit to one year of active duty for each year of participation in the program, with a minimum commitment of three years.
